About Circulation Coins of the National Bank

Due to the frequent appeal of citizens to the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic concerning obtaining information about circulation coins of the national currency with nominal value of 10 Soms, the Cash Management Department of the National Bank informs as follows:

Circulation coins of the national currency with nominal values of 10 and 50 Tyiyns and 1, 3, 5 Soms were put in circulation by the National Bank on January 1, 2008. From December 1, 2009, the circulation coin of 10 Soms nominal value was issued, thus, supplementing the nominal range of previously issued circulation coins. The coins of 10 and 50 Tyiyns nominal values a made of steel coated with brass, while the coins of 1, 3, 5 and 10 Soms nominal values are made of steel coated with nickel. Each circulation coin has its own size, diameter, weight, and notches on the milled edge (side surface) of the coin.

To date, there are two types of 10 Soms circulating coins in the countrys cash turnover, a distinctive feature of which is the milled edge. One part of coins has an engrailment on the milled edge, and the other part has the inscriptions on the milled edge: nominal value of the coin in words "ON SOM", "five-pointed star" and digital inscription "10 SOMS". The milled edge inscriptions carry out the functions of a protective element of the coins against counterfeiting.

Circulation coins and the banknotes of the national currency, regardless of the year of their issue and the protective characteristics, have the status of legal payment instrument on the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic and are subject to mandatory acceptance as means of payment at their nominal values.
